How the names are built
Every result is a first name plus a surname. The first name comes from a list of 30 masculine names (Bellamy, Pipkin, Grimble, Hobson, Rufus, Tolliver and others) or 20 feminine ones, mostly flowers and herbs (Primrose, Marigold, Freesia, Larkspur, Jasmine). The surname comes from 30 compound words that sound like a farm, a pantry or a stream bank: Pumpernickel, Thistledown, Burrowbrook, Ironkettle, Teaberry. You might get results such as Tolliver Pumpernickel, Daisy Nutbrook, Corwin Sorrelby or Peregard Elderberry. Choose male, female or mixed; a mixed run picks male or female at random with equal odds. The female list is shorter (20 names against 30), so female first names repeat sooner.
The names are original, not taken from any book or game. Halflings are a staple of tabletop fantasy and owe a debt to Tolkien's hobbits, but this site is not affiliated with Tolkien's estate, Wizards of the Coast or any publisher.
Why the surnames sound the way they do
| Kind of word | Examples from the list | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Food and pantry | Pumpernickel, Barleycorn, Honeydew, Dumpling | A family of bakers, brewers or hearty eaters |
| Plants | Elderberry, Thistledown, Sorrelby, Rosehip | Gardeners and herb gatherers |
| Water and earth | Burrowbrook, Underbrook, Mossbottom, Quickwater | A hillside home near a stream |
| Household objects | Ironkettle, Kettlewick, Fiddlestick | Tinkers, cooks, musicians |
All surnames are single compound words, and several recur across pages of results, which suits a people who live in large, interlinked families. If your party meets three Teaberrys in one village, make them cousins and give each a habit.
Three results, read critically
Grimble Teaberry works well: a slightly comic first name against a gentle surname, memorable at a table. Sandry Ironkettle is stronger for a character who is a tinker or a cook, because the surname gives you a trade to roleplay. Jasmine Goosegreen sounds sweet but a little ordinary, since Jasmine is also a common human name, so a player who wants a clearly fantasy feel may prefer Larkspur or Elderflower.
The tool does not add nicknames, titles or family trees. Nicknames such as "Long Grimble" or "Little Ruby" are easy to add by hand and often reach NPCs before their formal names do.
Fitting a halfling into a table or story
Keep syllables soft and rounded. The charm of a halfling name comes from the gap between its coziness and the courage of the person carrying it, so a rogue called Poppy Wickerby is more memorable than one with a brooding name. If you are building a whole setting, how to create fantasy names covers consistency between peoples, and the D&D character names guide looks at names in play. Small-folk neighbors with far stranger names come from the gnome name generator, and human companions can be named with the knight name generator.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are halfling names the same as hobbit names?
Halflings in tabletop role-playing games are modeled loosely on hobbits, so the style is similar: rustic first names, plant and food words, and surnames from homes and farms. The names this generator produces are original combinations, not names from Tolkien's books.
How are halfling surnames formed here?
Each is a single compound word from a fixed list of 30, built from a plant, food, household or landscape word. Burrowbrook suggests a home by a stream, Pumpernickel a baker, Sorrelby a herb patch. You can combine two such words yourself for a custom family name.
What first names suit halfling women?
The generator's female list is 20 names, mostly flowers and herbs such as Primrose, Poppy, Marigold or Larkspur. The aim is warmth and a slightly rustic sound, not mystery or menace.
Do halflings have nicknames?
The tool does not generate them, but nicknames based on height, habit or a famous mishap fit village life, such as 'Long Grimble' or 'Little Ruby'. They are a quick way to give a one-scene NPC personality.
Should a halfling name be easy to pronounce?
Generally yes. Two or three soft syllables fit the friendly, familiar feel. If a name is a tongue twister, it will usually suit another people better, such as orcs.
Can I choose male or female halfling names?
Yes. Pick male, female or mixed before generating. Because every pair draws from the same 30 surnames, the same surname will turn up repeatedly, which is realistic for one village but worth varying if you want every family distinct.
Is there a limit to the number of names?
The tool shows a fresh list each time, and the combinations are limited by the lists: 900 male pairings and 600 female pairings. For a large cast, edit a few results by hand.
