Two things people mean by a Jedi name

This is a fan-made generator inspired by Star Wars. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Lucasfilm or Disney. Searches for a Jedi name split into two requests: the online birthday formula, and a character name for a story, a campaign or a costume. This tool does the second.

The fan formula, which this tool does not apply

The game goes like this. Your Jedi first name is the first three letters of your last name plus the first two letters of your first name. Your Jedi surname is the first two letters of your mother's maiden name plus the first three letters of the town where you were born. For a made-up person, Jane Smith, whose mother was a Brown and who was born in Dayton, that gives Smija Brday. It is quick, personal and often unpronounceable, which is part of the fun.

What the generator does

It pairs one of 34 short first names with one of 35 surnames, giving 1,190 combinations, for results such as Cael Ostrel, Ione Voss, Nira Sarvon and Keth Marrick. There are no titles, hyphens, apostrophes or numbers, and no male or female option. The tool never produces Sith names, since Sith conventions (the title Darth plus a single name) are different.

How these names sound, and where they stray

ResultVerdict
Thessa NavarreSmooth and easy to say; the Romance-language surname gives a diplomatic, temple-scholar feel
Keth MarrickClipped and martial; suits a duelist or a field commander
Mirek MaddoxTwo m sounds make it a mouthful, and Maddox reads as an everyday English surname

The films favor invented-sounding names with a pair of syllables or a hyphen, such as Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon or Ahsoka Tano. Many of this tool's surnames instead look like real ones: Lindqvist, Orsini, Maddox, Norwood. The effect is more grounded and human than the saga's own names, which can be a plus for a story set among ordinary people in the galaxy. If you want a stranger sound, change a vowel or add a hyphen yourself. The first-name list also includes Luke, which most people will link to a famous character, so swap that one if you want to avoid the echo.

Adding rank and role

In the setting, trainees are Padawans, fully trained members are Knights and senior teachers are Masters, so Cael Ostrel could become Padawan Cael Ostrel, then Knight Ostrel. Surnames are rarely explained on screen, so you can decide whether yours is a family, a homeworld or a temple name. For more variety from the same universe, try the Star Wars name generator. A more medieval order suits the knight name generator, and the villain name generator covers dark-side antagonists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this an official Star Wars tool?

No. It is a fan-made generator that is not affiliated with or endorsed by Lucasfilm or Disney. Its names are original combinations written for this page.

What is the Jedi name formula I keep seeing online?

Take the first three letters of your last name plus the first two of your first name, then the first two letters of your mother's maiden name plus the first three of your birthplace. This tool does not use it.

Does this make Sith names?

No. Sith characters in the saga typically use the title Darth followed by one name, which this tool does not produce. For a dark-side antagonist, use the villain generator.

Do results ever match canon characters?

Only by coincidence. The lists are original, but Luke is in the first-name list, and with short names a result can echo a character you know. Change one name if that matters to you.

Why do some results sound like ordinary Earth names?

Several surnames, such as Orsini, Lindqvist and Norwood, are real-sounding. Edit a vowel or add a hyphen if you want a more alien result.

What titles go with a Jedi name?

Padawan for a trainee, Knight for a full member and Master for a senior teacher. These are written before the name, such as Master Keth Marrick.

Can I use a result for cosplay or a roleplay character?

Yes, for fan use such as costumes, tabletop campaigns and fan fiction. Do not present the names as official or use them in commercial products tied to the franchise.
