What a wood elf result is made of

The first name is an invented, elvish-sounding one (Anariel, Glorindel, Maedrion, Eirwen, Yavelle) drawn from the same lists as the elf name generator: 33 male, 32 female. The difference is the surname, which comes from a separate list of 25 forest compounds such as Mosswalker, Greenhollow, Birchwhisper, Rootwander, Fernpath and Timberwind. The result takes one of four forms. About 60 percent are first name plus surname (Anariel Greenhollow), 15 percent use "of the" (Glorindel of the Greenshadow), 15 percent swap the surname for a title (Elenwyn the Ancient), and the rest have both (a surname, then a comma and a title). Choose male, female or mixed.

The surname does the forest work

GroupExamples from the listHint
Trees and plantsOakbloom, Elmroot, Ivythorn, Ashbloom, VineleafA grove or a family tied to one tree
Movement and watchingMosswalker, Rootwander, Fernpath, BirchwhisperA scout or tracker
PlacesGreenhollow, Mossglen, Thicketbloom, BramblewoodA settlement or home territory

Because the surname list is only 25 and plant-heavy, a cast of ten wood elves will repeat words like Moss, Green and Bloom. Reserve plant surnames for families, then give individuals a nickname drawn from creatures or weather (Wren, Heron, Mist).

Where the results fall short

The first names are long. Most run three or four syllables, so a result such as Glorindel Greenshadow is a mouthful to shout across a clearing. Life in the woods favors brevity, so cut a result down: Glor, Anari, or just the surname as a call-name. Also, the "of the" form simply inserts the surname, so you get awkward phrasing such as "of the Ashbloom" or "of the Greenshadow". It reads fine if you treat the surname as a place; otherwise reword it by hand ("of Ashbloom"). The titles are the same 12 used on every elf page (the Ancient, the Radiant, the Swift), so a village full of titled elves will feel samey.

Building a hunting party or village

Give scouts a shared pattern so they read as a group: a party might all take bird words for nicknames, a river community water words. Two or three odd ones out hint at adopted members or outsiders, and each offers a small story about how they got the name. The names suit D&D rangers and scouts in any woodland setting.

For house surnames and grander names, see the elf name generator, which uses the same first names. Guardians of sacred groves may prefer the druid name generator, and the guide to creating fantasy names explains how to build your own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are wood elf names shorter than other elf names?

Not in this tool. The first names come from fairly long lists, and the forest surname is added to them. If you want short names, trim the first name by hand.

How do I create my own wood elf surname from nature?

Join a natural thing to a second word for a place, movement or quality. Fern plus path gives Fernpath, hawk plus wing gives Hawkwing. Strong surnames imply a skill, so Hawkwing suggests sharp eyes and Fernpath suggests moving quietly.

Should wood elves have family names?

It depends on your setting. A common approach is to give the clan a plant or place name, like Briarstone, and individuals a nickname based on something they did. That keeps a community readable and gives each character something personal.

Can I use these names for rangers and druids?

Yes. Rangers suit the scout-like names with a movement word, such as Mosswalker or Rootwander. Druids may prefer plant-heavy names; the druid generator offers more of those.
