Prefix, name, designator
Results have three parts, always in the same order: a prefix, a ship name and a designator. Examples are SFS Gallant X, EAS Celestia Zero, RFS Olympus Omega and CSV Eternity II. The prefix list has 20 entries, the name list 30 and the designator list 20, so there are 12,000 combinations.
| Part | What is in the list | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Prefix | USS, HMS, ISS, UNSC, IKS, UES, EAS, TCS, GSS, SFS and others, plus plain "The" | Some are real navy or station styles, some are invented faction codes |
| Name | Enterprise, Voyager, Defiant, Prometheus, Serenity, Pathfinder, Vanguard, Celestia, Aurora and similar | Virtue, exploration and myth words |
| Designator | Alpha, Prime, II, III, X, Zero, Omega, Seven, Mark IV, Ultra and others | Marks a model, a sister ship or a refit |
Read the results with a critical eye
Take The Vanguard Nova. It drops the faction prefix, so it reads like a civilian or independent vessel, and Vanguard plus Nova both lean on forward-looking words. HMS Invincible Ultra mixes a real Royal Navy prefix with a name used by several British warships and a modern-sounding suffix, which feels mismatched for a serious naval setting. ASV Celestia Seven is clean and invented throughout, and would work for a fleet because the designator implies a numbered class.
Several names in the list are borrowed from famous fiction or real craft, including Enterprise, Voyager, Defiant, Reliant, Excelsior, Serenity and Prometheus, and prefixes such as USS, UNSC and IKS are used in Star Trek and Halo. A result like USS Enterprise Prime will be recognized immediately. For an original setting, regenerate until the name is less famous. The tool does not check for matches.
Where good ship names come from
Real naming traditions are useful for your own edits. The space shuttle Endeavour was named for the ship Captain James Cook sailed, and Discovery, Challenger and Atlantis took the names of earlier exploring vessels. Apollo and Artemis come from Greek myth. Humor is its own tradition: Iain M. Banks's Culture novels give ships long, sardonic names such as Just Read the Instructions, which tells you something about the artificial mind running it.
In fiction, use one prefix per government and a different one for a rival or a pirate. If you reuse a name across a series, a designator keeps the sister ships apart, and a class often takes the name of its lead ship. Keep a list so that two vessels do not end up with the same name in different scenes. For water-borne vessels see the boat name generator or pirate ship name generator. For a ship's destination or its onboard mind, try the planet name generator and robot name generator.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do prefixes like UES or ISS mean on a ship name?
In real navies prefixes such as HMS or USS show which service a ship belongs to. In fiction you can invent your own to mark a government, company or faction. This tool mixes real-style and invented prefixes, so use one prefix per faction in your own story.
Why do ship names end in a word like Alpha or Seven?
The ending acts as a designator for a class, model or sister ship. It lets one base name produce a line of vessels without confusion, which is useful for fleets in a story or a game.
Should a spaceship name be serious or funny?
Either works if it matches your setting. Serious names suit military fleets, while jokes suit independent crews and artificial minds. This tool produces serious names, so write any joke name yourself.
