Sample results from the Cyberpunk Name Generator

A few examples this tool can create. Use the generator above for as many new ones as you like.

  • Glitch Jacker
  • Vector Chrome
  • Zero Rider
  • Chrome Grid
  • Quantum Punk
  • Kernel Jack
  • Cyber Jack
  • Render Grid
  • Pixel Core
  • Neon Steel
  • Binary Wraith
  • Proxy Slinger

Two words: a computing term and a street word

Every result is a two-word handle. The first word comes from a list of 35 tech and neon terms (Kernel, Proxy, Hex, Quantum, Glitch, Chrome and so on), and the second from a list of 30 street or hardware words (Jack, Burn, Edge, Wraith, Decker, Slinger, Rig, Tek). Results such as Logic Edge, Hex Jack, Proxy Burn, Quantum Vex and Chrome Jacker show the shape. There are no numbers, symbols or leetspeak swaps in the output, and no given names or surnames.

What works and what does not

Because the lists are short and each word is picked independently, some pairings fit a character and some are just noise. Compare a few you might get:

ResultWhy it works or fails
Chrome JackerReads as a character: cybernetics plus a plugged-in role. A strong fit for a netrunner or street surgeon.
Razor SlingerSounds like a person with a reputation and a weapon; the second word implies a trade.
Proxy BurnPlausible as an alias, but "Burn" gives no hint of what the person does.
Logic EdgeCloser to a software product or a corporate division than a human being.

As a rule, second words that describe a person (Decker, Slinger, Rider, Walker, Runner) make better characters, while the object words (Grid, Core, Net, Link, Edge) make better crews, programs or gadgets. If a result is close but flat, rerun and keep only one of the two words.

Handles versus legal names

In cyberpunk fiction, runners and hackers usually go by an alias and keep a birth name private. This tool only produces the alias. For the name underneath, you can draw on a real tradition, such as the Japanese name generator or the Russian name generator, which suits the genre's mixed-language cities. Keeping the two apart lets you reveal the real name later as a story beat.

Corporations, ships and robots

The tool does not generate corporation or district names. Corporate names in the genre tend to be smooth and abstract, so you will probably want to write those yourself, or borrow the format of the spaceship name generator for vessels and the robot name generator for synthetic characters.

Words like Neon, Chrome and Glitch appear in a lot of published games, novels and usernames, so a result may well match something that already exists. The combinations are generic, but if you plan to publish under one, search for it first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the generator add numbers or symbols to cyberpunk handles?

No. Output is two plain words separated by a space, such as Hex Jack or Pixel Jack. If you want a username-style tag, add a number or swap a letter yourself, and keep it to one change so the name stays readable.

What kind of word comes first and second?

The first word is a tech or neon term like Kernel, Static, Nova or Render. The second is a street, hardware or role word like Wraith, Decker, Burn or Rig. Because they are chosen independently, any first word can pair with any second word.

Can I get a full name with a first name and surname?

Not from this tool. It makes handles only. Pair a handle with a name from one of the culture-based generators if you want your character to have a legal name as well.

Why do some results sound like software instead of a person?

Each word is chosen independently from short lists, so a pairing like Logic Edge can land closer to a product name than a character. Rerunning is quick; keeping one good word and replacing the other is often the fastest fix.

Should a cyberpunk character have both a handle and a real name?

In most of the genre's fiction the handle is the public identity and the birth name is kept for a few trusted people, which gives you something to reveal later. It is a storytelling choice, not a requirement.
